AOC Pushes for Thomas, Alito Impeachment, Seriously?

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) just dropped her impeachment articles against Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, sticking to her earlier promise after the Supreme Court’s presidential immunity ruling. It’s all part of her grand crusade against what she sees as rampant corruption within the highest court.

AOC claims these articles are a response to the “unchecked corruption crisis on the Supreme Court” which she believes has now become a full-blown Constitutional crisis. She paints a picture of Justices Thomas and Alito as deeply entangled in financial and personal conflicts of interest, arguing that their refusal to recuse themselves from such cases is a clear threat to the rule of law and democracy itself.

The charges against Thomas are quite the laundry list: failing to disclose gifts and income, and not stepping aside from cases where his wife had a legal or financial stake. Alito, on the other hand, is accused of not recusing himself from cases where he had personal biases and also failing to disclose gifts and income. One particularly amusing note is Alito’s defense for not recusing himself in cases involving Trump and Jan. 6 defendants, which involved an upside-down flag and an “Appeal to Heaven” flag at his beach home. Alito argued that his wife had the legal right to display the flag, which makes you wonder if he’s more concerned about flag etiquette than judicial ethics.

Both justices have denied any wrongdoing, of course. And Republicans? They’re dismissing all this as just another round of the Democrats’ ongoing smear campaign to undermine the Supreme Court.

AOC has been quite vocal about her disdain for several recent Supreme Court rulings and has been pushing for the court to address the ethics concerns surrounding Thomas and Alito. After the July 1 Supreme Court decision that hinted Trump might have some immunity related to his post-2020 election actions, AOC said she was gearing up to file these impeachment articles.

Joining AOC in this endeavor are her fellow Democrats: Reps. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), Delia Ramirez (D-IL), Maxwell Frost (D-FL), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Jamaal Bowman (D-NY). Looks like the impeachment train is gathering some steam, but whether it will actually leave the station is another story entirely.
