Over 16 protestors were arrested during a gathering at Grand Central that was established to disrupt the evening commute, according to CBS News. In addition to arrests, over 20 summonses were distributed by both the NYPD and the MTA police. During the protest, a few men from the group encouraged individuals to damage turnstiles and engage in mass sabotage of the MTA. The group protesting stated that they rallied to abolish subway fares and get rid of police patrols in the transit system.
“There is so much I the budget that can cover free transportation instead of more police,” stated one protestor. Although the rally was meant to abolish police presence, there were many who disagreed with the protestors. “We need more cops on the trains. Fewer muggings, fewer rapes,” stated one commuter who disagreed with the intent of those participating in the rally. The protestors painted graffiti on the walls and poured glue on the turnstiles.
