Researchers have found over one million dead seabirds in less than a year, thanks to warm ocean waters, according to CNN. The birds are known as Common Murre and they apparently died of starvation between 2015 and 2016. A massive section of the ocean that heated over 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit during the heat wave of 2013 that lasted until 2016 has been called the ‘Blob’ by scientists and has been blamed for millions of dead murres that have washed up on shore.
Researchers now worry that the overwhelming number of dying murres could result in a major decline in the bird’s population. Not only are the birds dwindling in numbers due to the temperature of the ocean, but they are also failing to reproduce as a result of a lack of food. The heated ocean has made it difficult for the birds to find the fish they normally eat that swim to the top of the sea.
