A 15-year-old girl named Kayla Kenney was recently expelled from Whitfield Academy after a photo of her surfaced on social media of her celebrating her birthday with her family while wearing a rainbow shirt, according to the Daily News. After seeing the photo, the private school immediately expelled the girl by way of email, stating that the shirt she chose to wear in the photo was associated with “lifestyle violations.”
Kenney’s mother told local news outlets that she was mortified by the school’s decision to expel her daughter over a mere rainbow shirt photo that was posted on her Facebook page. “I took a picture of her blowing out her candles and I posted that on my Facebook page,” stated Kenney’s mother to news station WAVE 3. “Not long after I posted the photo, I received an email from the school dean saying the picture ‘demonstrates a posture of morality and cultural acceptance contrary to that of Whitefield Academy’s beliefs.’” Kenney now attends public school.
