Francesca Di Giovanni, 66, has done what most other women throughout Vatican history has failed to do…she’s gotten appointed to a senior role in the Vatican’s most important office, according to the BBC. Giovanni will serve as undersecretary for multilateral affairs in the Secretariat of State and she will be responsible for coordinating the Holy See’s relations with the UN.
“I hope that my being a woman might reflect itself positively in this task, even if they are gifts that I certainly find in my male colleagues as well,” Giovanni said while being interviewed by the Vatican press. This announcement comes amidst concern from traditionalists who are weary of the direction Pope Francis is taking the Church. Giovanni is a lawyer who has worked with the Vatican for over 25 years.
