You would never imagine that a fight about which race is the deadliest or most criminal could be funnier than ever. At least we couldn’t…until now. Here we have a news segment where the anchors turn the news into a race battle to see which of the Black or White race is most criminal. Any other time, we might find this offensive. However, this is too funny to take seriously and that was the intent behind the skits in the first place.
The funny scenes teach us all that we place a lot of attention and time discussing which race is more criminal than the other. We take sides on which group tends to be the ‘best’ and which group tends to be more oppressive. Rather than focusing our attention on which groups are better than the other, it would be nice if people simply began to notice the similarities of all races so that they can see that they are really no different from the other man or woman. As humans, we all bleed, we all hurt, and we all love our children. If this is the case, why do we continue to feel as if we are different from another person simply because we have a different skin tone? When will we finally realize that fighting over which race is best is only keeping our attention from focusing on the issues in life that really matter? There are things like recession, pollution, and joblessness that affect us all—regardless of a person’s color. It’s too bad that we don’t always think about this fact.
Laughing at ourselves is something that takes skills. It helps us to understand our issues, see how ridiculous we are on certain subjects, and reduce our tendency to take ourselves so seriously. If we can’t laugh at ourselves or our problems, then we will find it more difficult to communicate with one another about how we might solve the problem itself.
