The instant President Trump ended the 35-day partial government shutdown Democrats began doing a victory dance — thinking Trump had suffered irreparable damage to his political base.
However, a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal shows just the opposite has occurred, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi receiving most of the criticism.
In fact, the Democratic lawmaker’s approval rating dropped a stunning 6-points during the government shutdown, as just under 50% of Americans surveyed rated her dismal performance as “very negative,” while only 28% (mostly progressives) rated her performance favorably.
By contrast, President Trump’s approval rating remained virtually unchanged during the shutdown, with 43% of Americans approving of his job performance. According to the Wall Street Journal poll, the Presidents overall job performance since November was down by only 3%.
Remarkably his 43% approval rating is the same as it was in December, just 10 days before the start of the partial government shutdown. However, the President’s overall disapproval rating remained around 54%.
A recent Rasmussen Poll also found that while a majority of voters blamed the President for the initial shutdown, a stunning 40% acknowledged that congressional Democrats were more to blame, because of their refusal to negotiate with the President, once the shutdown began.
