France has now reported 100 cases, Spain 45 cases, Germany 79 cases — not to mention Italy, where the number of confirmed corona-virus cases has soared from 3 to 1128 in only two weeks, with 54 deaths reported. Switzerland and Austria, which border Italy on the north, just confirmed their first cases of the virus. The World Health Organization’s Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters that “the virus has “pandemic potential” — though we believe it’s already reached that level.”
Yet, European authorities insist that the Schengen Area, which abolishes passport checks and border controls between 26 European states, should not be “compromised.” So there are still no policies in place for Italy’s national borders to be closed down, even though 50,000 citizens in Lombardy and Veneto are now under internal quarantine lockdown.
Italy’s leftist Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte is still refusing to put border control and security measures in place. His excuse? He pathetically claims that controls at the border wouldn’t do anything to stop the spread of the virus or contain it. As a result, an outraged Matteo Salvini, former Italian Interior Minister, demanded that Conte resign “if he isn’t able to defend Italy and Italians.”
But shockingly, many leftist Italian politicians agreed with Conte’s government. In Rome, Health Minister Roberto Speranza told reporters, “We agreed to keep borders open; closing borders would be a disproportionate and ineffective measure at this time.” So Italian national borders remain open, even though Italy has now become a major source of the Coronavirus that could spread to European countries on its borders.
And in the U.S., health officials have also said they believe the potential for a major outbreak exists.
Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told American reporters that, “Widespread transmission of COVID-19 in the United States would translate into large numbers of people needing medical care at the same time.”
However, in contrast to the suicidal, politically-“correct” policies of European countries, Trump has put into place severe new immigration restrictions into the U.S. He has restricted flights from China. He has put Iran on his list of nations that we won’t accept immigrants since Iran has now reported 54 deaths from the Coronavirus in its country. President Trump is also trying to severely restrict immigration from Mexico.
In other words, while European, radical-left politicians who believe that open borders are a “moral imperative,” President Trump knows that his primary job is to protect Americans, and political correctness be damned. He understands that border security is health security. Thank god he was elected President, and God help us if a radical-leftist like Bernie Sanders won the upcoming Presidential election.
