BREAKING NEWS: Mid-Thirties Married Couple With Small Baby Plan To Financially Support Themselves
This is essentially what Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s announcement that they plan to step back from their roles as senior members of the British royal family is saying. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex surprised their followers and the Queen herself with an unexpected Instagram post on January 8 in which they stated they plan to spend less time in the United Kingdom, more time in North America, and reduce their activities in the royal family while continuing to support the Queen. They also plan on working toward financial independence. They currently enjoy monetary support from the British taxpayers, who pay upwards of $50 million per year to support the entire royal family.
The controversial royal couple appears to be attempting to live a more normal life than most members of Harry’s famous birth family, but they will hardly be slumming it with the average Joe. With homes on two continents, diamond tiaras in the safe and the Queen of England’s great-grandson in their nursery, they will still have access to hefty resources unavailable to most modern couples.
Kudos to them for breaking free from the tight grip of the royal family, though. Also, good luck – immediately after they declared their quasi-independence online, the Queen’s office of Buckingham Palace released a statement noting that discussion was still in the early stage and the change would be a gradual process. For members of the outdated monarchy, Grandma’s approval still reigns supreme.
