Is anyone else reluctantly fascinated by Great Britain’s royal family? They are so un-American (duh) and their values are so contrary to my own, but I can’t stop watching them.
Prince Andrew is the talk of royal watchers at the moment after his disastrous interview about his connections with the late financier and pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. His illegal actions concerning an underage girl seem pretty irrefutable, and I’m also fascinated by his “removal from royal duties.” What is a royal anyway, besides a figurehead? Parliament votes on and decides the actual laws that British citizens follow. What does the royal family do, besides wave in parades, serve as the patron of charities, wear funny hats, and be hounded by the press?
Prince William and Prince Harry reportedly have a crack in their brotherly bond at the moment. Personally, I’m more concerned with the heavily stylized 1950s outfits they dress their children in for photo ops. Everyone in the royal family follows a strict dress code, they can’t have their own independently operated social media accounts, and they have to ask the Queen’s permission to marry the person they love.
The royal family is so stifled by tradition that it’s not surprising to see individual members crack from within. The stress they are under while smiling for the cameras in a pillbox hat with a turquoise feather is too much for any human being to bear. I just hope they stick to brotherly quarrels in the future and stay away from trafficking minors for sex.
