Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla) and Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla) introduced a bill known as the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture Act which makes it a federal felony to perform certain acts of cruelty toward animals, according to ABC News. The bill was unanimously passed by the U.S. Senate and is now awaiting the final green light from Trump. “This bill sends a clear message that our society does not accept cruelty against animals,” stated Deutch.
“I’m deeply thankful for all of the advocates who helped us pass this bill, and I look forward to the President’s signature,” he continued. This bill is meant to serve as an expansion of the 2010 Animal Crush Video Prohibition Act, which illegalizes individuals stomping on animals and distributing the event through video. The act will be limited to interstate commerce and federal property, rather than local laws or enforcement for animal cruelty.
