What was once a hand gesture that indicated that a person felt “OK” about something, of which includes the index finger-to-thumb sign, is now classified as a symbol of hate, according to NPR. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which is a Jewish civil rights organization, added the hand gesture to its database of “Hate on Display” after discovering that parts of the Internet associate the hand gesture with white supremacy.
“Context is always key,” stated director of the ADL Center on Extremism, Oren Segal. “More people than not will use the OK symbol as just ‘OK’. But in those cases where there’s more underlining meaning, I think it’s important for people to understand that it could be used, and is being used, for hate as well,” Segal continued. After noticing continued widespread connections to hate groups and their use of the OK sign, Segal stated that it simply couldn’t be ignored.
