When asked what she would like to say to world leaders during the opening of the United Nations summit, 16-year-old climate change activist Greta Thunberg burst into a passionate and angry speech on how her generation was let down by leaders, according to Axios.
“I shouldn’t be up here,” Thunberg began. “I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us for hope. How dare you! You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words,” Thunberg implored as she fought back tears.
“You are failing us, but the young people are starting to understand your betrayal,” Thunberg continued. She ended her speech by stating her disgust with world leaders who focused more on economic growth than they did on the future of the planet. Her tearful speech ended with major applause from the audience.
