It’s hard to believe that we live in a society that forces individuals to have a background check for purchasing guns, yet they are not forced to prove their ability to provide their children with safety and security. Say hello to a couple that forced their children to live in filth that was so horrible that the police officers were sick to their stomach when they witnessed the living environment.
Here we have two people who forced their children ages 1-13 to live in a roach-infested environment that included thousands of roaches on the children’s beds, in their cereal, and throughout their clothes. The home smells like urine and the children look as if they have not bathed in months. Police arrived at the home of the couple after being tipped off by someone who witnessed the children and their appearance. No one could have ever suspected that the children lived in such a vile environment.
When the police looked through the window of the house, they witnessed thousands of roaches crawling all over the couch, walls, and furniture. They stated that they had never in their careers seen anything so heartbreaking. Although the children were taken away, and the couple charged with reckless endangerment and child neglect, it still didn’t solve the overall problem that exists in society today. The problem of adults who place their children at risk in their own homes, yet who never get caught.
The same way that people lobby for gun control, pro-choice, and other issues, is the same way that people should fight for the rights of children who are being abused by their own parents. It’s not always easy to discover child neglect, especially when it is in the child’s own home, but it can be caught if one simply takes the time to look. If a child comes to school in dirty clothes, smells bad, and never seems to have money for lunch then it can be assumed that there is something worth checking out at their home. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
