Have you ever seen a homeless person on the street that you gave some of your loose change to? You gave them a few coins and then probably walked away feeling incredibly great about yourself, right? Well, sharing your resources with someone in need is a true blessing, but is it enough?
Here, we have an example of what it means to give someone you all. We can’t provide people on the street with everything that we have to offer, but we can give them something that will help bring attention to their need to be supported. In this video, for example, there is a man on the street who is approached by a young man who offers something that the guy just can’t refuse.
When attention is then brought to both of them, people begin to give money. Not only did they support the young man who offered his services on the street alongside the homeless man, but they also did what they could to help the man who lived on those streets every night. If we truly want to help people who have nowhere to go, then why can’t we think of creative ways to provide them with the assistance that they need? We feel as if throwing a few coins at them will assist in ending their plight, but it doesn’t. All it does is provide them with one potential meal that will help to get them through a couple of hours.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t provide a real solution to the problem of homelessness.
Most might argue that giving money to homeless people is better than doing nothing at all. This is true; however, it doesn’t mean that we can’t come up with other means in which to help. Organizing a group of people to collect food and clothing—all while pushing local politicians to be more forthright in their effort to help the homeless—are ways to create assistance that will last. It all starts with us, so let’s do what we can to provide the help that those without a home will need in the long run.
