Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration released a health warning to the public stating that drinking bleach is dangerous—potentially life-threatening—and that people should stop doing it, according to ARS Technica. The warning comes amidst continued issues of individuals drinking bleach to solve medical issues such as HIV, cancer, the flu, hepatitis, and a host of other medical problems.
The idea that bleach cures a multitude of medical conditions comes from sellers who promote “miracle bleach elixirs” that have the power to cure-all. When people ingest the bleach elixirs and begin vomiting or experience diarrhea, they are told that it is proof that the elixir is working. The FDA wants everyone to know that “the statement is false” and bleach is a toxin that can cause life-threatening low blood pressure, acute liver failure, and damage to the digestive tract and kidneys.
