After the celebration of the Stonewall anniversary, new conflicts revealed a division between transgender women and gay men in the LGBTQ community, according to Mercury News.
Sparking from the celebration of World Pride and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, African-American transgender women and white gay men boiled over and are causing rifts in the community. “If pride month is the only time you talk about these issues, that’s probably a sign you should look into just how privileged you are,” stated Darya Shirvani, a supporter of the transgender community.
The Human Rights Watch issued a report in 2017 that showed trans women of color being the target of violence, of which includes murder. “the trans community has not made the same progress as the gay community,” stated Calamity Alexis, a transgender woman living in Brooklyn. “We’ve been largely abandoned by the gay rights movement,” she continued.
