The Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties subcommittee held a hearing on a bill that was introduced by Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX) to develop a response to the question of reparations for slavery, according to Fox News.
The fight for reparations was denied previously by former President Obama and Hillary Clinton, but now it has resurfaced and is embraced by 2020 presidential hopefuls. “The role of the federal government in supporting the institution of slavery and subsequent discrimination directed against blacks is an injustice that must be formally acknowledged and addressed,” said Jackson-Lee during the hearing.
As Republican officials spoke on their feelings regarding the bill, they were booed and heckled by Democrats. “Putting aside the injustice of monetary reparations from current taxpayers for the sins of a small subset of Americans from many generations ago, the fair distribution of reparations would be nearly impossible,” stated Mike Johnson (R-LA) amidst shouts and heckles.
