Putman County Court Judge James Reitz, 57, died after suffering a heart attack in the courtroom, according to Fox News. Retz completed one case and then asked for help when he felt tightness in his chest. When he fell out, court officers attempted CPR until the paramedics arrived, but unfortunately, Retz died after arriving at the hospital.
Reitz was a well-known advocate for addiction recovery, and he was prided by his colleagues and the public as being a fair judge who gave individuals second chances. “He was indeed the ultimate public servant,” stated Sen. Terrence Murphy in his personal Facebook post. Others called Reitz a “pioneer for his beloved Drug Treatment Court” and for saving countless lives in Putnam County. Reitz served as a county judge since 2007.
