Automaker Ford is partnering with Agility Robotics to research how they can get a package from a self-driving car onto someone’s porch, according to a Ford press release. “The Postal Service delivered twice the volume in 2018 that it did 10n years ago, and that is an issue Ford plans to work with Agility to solve,” stated Ford’s Vice President of Research and Advanced Engineering, Dr. Ken Washington.
“Together, we will work toward making sure self-driving vehicles are uniquely outfitted to accomplish something that’s proven surprisingly difficult to do: Carry out that final step of getting your delivery from the car to your door,” Washington continued. Robots called Digit have already been developed by Agility Robotics and they can carry up to 40 pounds, they detect and react to obstacles, they recover from bumps, and they are capable of climbing stairs. Additionally, the robots are outfitted with cameras and are equipped to share data with a self-driving car.
