Researchers from the Environmental Working Group and Northeastern University find during a recent study that 43 states throughout the country have drinking water contaminated with PFAS chemicals, according to CBS News. The chemicals in the water have been linked to birth defects, cancer, and infertility, based on information provided by the CDC.
The study compiled information that showed over 19 million people being exposed to contaminated water and that at least 610 of the locations that were contaminated included civilian airports, firefighter training sites, public water systems, and military bases. “The frightening thing about these chemicals is that they don’t break down in our bodies,” said David Andrews, a scientist for the Environmental Working Group.
“This study should be frightening to all Americans in many ways,” Andrews continued. The chemical found in water has been identified as PFAS’s. which is also used in cleaners, wire insulation, and paint, among other things.
